Your payslip says one amount, your bank account shows another, and part of your earnings comes from commission or overtime. That does not necessarily make your income unverifiable. It does mean the lender may need enough records to understand how the figures fit together.

There is no single proof-of-income checklist for every personal loan. Each lender sets its own acceptable documents, assessment method and look-back period. A well-prepared application provides a clear trail showing who paid you, how much you received and which income components are fixed or variable.

The most useful combination depends on how you earn. This summary helps you identify a sensible starting set before you check the lender’s current requirements.

Applicant Profile Useful Starting Documents Main Issue To Clarify
Fixed-Salary Employee Recent itemised payslips, CPF contribution history and salary-crediting bank statements Whether the stated salary matches the amount regularly received
Employee With Overtime, Bonuses Or Allowances Payslips with a pay breakdown, bank statements and supporting employer records where requested Which components are recurring, variable or reimbursements
Commission-Based Employee Payslips, commission statements, bank statements, CPF records and Notice of Assessment How earnings vary across stronger and weaker months
New Employee Available payslips, employment contract or employer letter, and first salary credit Whether there is enough current evidence after the job change
Freelancer Or Self-Employed Applicant Notice of Assessment, invoices, contracts and business or personal bank statements as requested Whether deposits can be traced to genuine work or business activity

What Proof Of Income Needs To Show

A lender generally needs to establish three things: the income belongs to you, it comes from an identifiable source, and it is sufficiently reliable for the lender’s assessment. A document is more useful when it shows your full name, the issuer, the relevant dates and a clear breakdown of the amount.

The records should also work together. A payslip explains how the employer calculated your pay. A bank statement shows what reached your account. CPF contribution history may help support your employment and wage pattern. An IRAS Notice of Assessment gives a broader, though older, view of income that was assessed for tax.

A lender may distinguish between basic salary, recurring variable earnings, one-off payments and reimbursements. Its treatment of each component is a credit-policy decision, not a standard rule.

Proof Of Income For Salaried Employees

For an employee on a fixed monthly salary, recent payslips are often the clearest starting point. Singapore employers must provide employees covered by the Employment Act with itemised payslips showing applicable salary components, including basic salary, allowances, additional payments, deductions, overtime and net salary.

Check that every payslip includes your name, employer, payment date and salary period. Obtain a complete copy from payroll if an export cuts off important details.

CPF Contribution History

CPF records can support the employment trail for employees who receive CPF contributions. CPF Board’s digital services allow members to view and save their contribution details for selected periods.

CPF history is supporting evidence, not a perfect substitute for every record. Contribution rules and timing differences mean that an entry may not mirror the gross or net payslip figure.

Employment Contracts And Employer Letters

If you have just started a job, you may not have the run of payslips the lender normally requests. An employment contract or employer letter can show your position, start date and agreed remuneration, while the payslips and bank credits available so far show that employment has begun.

Ask whether this combination is acceptable. Lenders may treat a new salary differently, particularly during probation or before the first full salary cycle. If you recently switched employers, it helps to understand whether you can get a personal loan after changing jobs in Singapore before you apply.

How Overtime, Bonuses And Allowances May Be Assessed

Variable pay needs context. The question is whether the lender accepts that component and how it evaluates continuity.

Overtime Pay

Regular overtime shown across payslips and bank credits is easier to trace than one unusually high month. A lender may average, discount or exclude it. Do not present your highest month as normal income unless the application instructions support that calculation.

Bonuses

A recurring bonus may be viewed differently from a discretionary one-off award. Supporting records establish what was paid, but not that the full amount will count as sustainable monthly income. Do not enter an annual bonus as monthly salary unless instructed.

Allowances

Separate fixed cash allowances from ad-hoc allowances and expense reimbursements. A recurring shift allowance may be remuneration, while a reimbursement simply repays a work expense. CPF Board lists examples of wages that attract CPF contributions, including overtime, bonuses, certain allowances and commission, but CPF treatment does not decide a lender’s credit policy.

Label each component accurately. If the lender asks for basic income and variable income separately, follow that format rather than combining everything into one figure.

What Lenders Look For In Bank Statements

A bank statement is most useful when it lets the assessor match incoming payments to the income declared on the application. Although review practices differ, these details commonly help establish a clean trail:

  • Account ownership: your name and enough account information to show that the statement belongs to you.
  • Payment source: a salary narration, employer name or consistent sender that can be connected to your employment records.
  • Dates and frequency: regular credits that broadly follow the employer’s pay cycle.
  • Amounts: deposits that can be reconciled with net salary, commission or separately paid variable components.
  • Complete context: all requested pages, rather than isolated transaction screenshots.
  • Unusual entries: large credits, reversals or transfers that may need an invoice, commission statement or short explanation.

Personal transfers are not automatically employment income. For commission or freelance work, connect deposits to a statement, invoice, contract or platform earnings report.

Use official PDF statements where possible. Do not hide, alter or crop transactions unless the lender confirms what may be redacted. If you are uncomfortable providing the requested statement, ask whether another document is acceptable instead of editing the record yourself.

What To Do When Salary Credits Do Not Match Payslips

A mismatch is not necessarily an error. The bank receives the amount transferred, while the payslip may show basic pay, gross earnings, deductions and net salary. Problems arise when the difference is left unexplained or the application uses the wrong figure.

Check These Explanations First

  • The application compares gross income with a net bank credit after CPF and other deductions.
  • Commission, overtime or a bonus was paid separately from the basic salary.
  • Unpaid leave, an advance, an absence or another deduction reduced that month’s net pay.
  • An expense reimbursement increased the bank credit but was not employment income.
  • The salary period and bank credit date fall in different calendar months.
  • Payroll split the payment across two accounts or corrected an earlier underpayment.

Build a One-Month Reconciliation

Take the gross earnings on the payslip, subtract the listed deductions, and compare the resulting net salary with the bank credit. Then account for any separately paid bonus, commission or reimbursement. If the figures still do not match, ask payroll for clarification before submitting the application.

Where supporting notes are allowed, identify the month, difference and proof. For example, “The S$800 difference is a travel reimbursement; it is not included in my declared monthly income.” Never alter a record to make the figures match.

If you are unsure whether to declare basic, gross or net pay, check the form’s definition and use the correct figure. Crawfort’s guide to calculating gross monthly income explains the distinction in more detail.

Document-Preparation Checklist For Commission Earners

Commission can be verifiable even when it changes monthly. Show the calculation and matching account payment across the requested period.

Prepare These Records

  • The number of consecutive payslips requested by the lender.
  • Commission statements showing the earning period, calculation and payment date.
  • Complete bank statements with the matching salary and commission credits marked in a separate index, without editing the statements.
  • CPF contribution history, where applicable.
  • Your latest IRAS Notice of Assessment and any earlier assessment requested by the lender. IRAS explains that a Notice of Assessment shows the types and amount of income taxed for the relevant basis period.
  • Your employment contract or compensation plan if it explains the basic-salary and commission structure.
  • A brief note for exceptional months, such as a delayed payout, clawback, unpaid leave or one-off incentive.

Create a Simple Commission Schedule

List each month, basic pay, gross commission, deductions, net amount and bank-credit date. Use this as an index, not a replacement for official documents, and include weaker months.

Use the averaging method stated by the lender. If none is published, ask how variable income should be entered. Do not assume that three, six or twelve months is the standard look-back period, because lenders and products can apply different requirements.

Proof Of Income For Other Work Arrangements

Freelancers And Self-Employed Applicants

Invoices show what you billed, not necessarily what you received. Pair them with corresponding deposits and tax records, and separate business receipts from your own transfers. If you lack payslips, review possible alternative income documents for a personal loan, then confirm what the lender accepts.

Part-Time And Platform Workers

Collect employer payslips or platform earnings statements, bank credits and relevant tax records. If you work for several employers or platforms, group the records by payer and month so the combined figure can be checked without double-counting transfers.

Foreign Employees

A lender may request your passport, valid work pass, employment contract and proof of address in addition to income documents. Make sure your name is consistent across these records. If a document is not in English, ask whether a certified translation is required.

How To Prepare And Submit Your Files

  1. Read the current product checklist. Requirements can differ between a bank loan and a loan from a licensed moneylender, and between products offered by the same lender.
  2. Use the requested period. More documents are not always better. Submit the complete period requested, with no missing months or pages.
  3. Download original PDFs. Check that names, dates, employers and transaction details are legible.
  4. Name files clearly. A format such as “Payslip-April-2026.pdf” or “Commission-Statement-Q2-2026.pdf” reduces confusion.
  5. Reconcile the figures. Compare the form, payslips, bank credits, CPF history and tax assessment before sending them.
  6. Use an official channel. Upload records through the lender’s genuine portal or provide them at its approved place of business. Never disclose your Singpass password.

When dealing with a licensed moneylender, check the lender against the Ministry of Law’s Registry. Its guidance for borrowers warns that a licensed moneylender should not grant a loan without due diligence and supporting documents such as payslips or an income tax assessment.

Does Proof Of Income Guarantee Approval?

No. Income documents allow the lender to verify and assess your earnings, but they do not guarantee approval, a particular loan amount or specific terms. The lender may also consider your existing repayment commitments, credit history, employment circumstances, requested amount and its internal criteria.

A complete file can still be declined if the loan is not affordable. Check how the instalment fits alongside essential expenses and existing debt. A personal loan calculator can help you plan repayments around your salary before you commit. After an unsuccessful application, identify the issue before trying again; start by reviewing the common reasons a personal loan application is rejected.

Prepare a Trail, Not Just a Total

The best income file makes the amount easy to follow. Start with the lender’s checklist, separate fixed pay from variable components, and make sure each bank credit can be connected to a payslip, commission statement, invoice or other genuine record.

If something does not match, explain it with evidence rather than trying to remove the discrepancy. That is especially important for commission, overtime, bonuses and allowances, where the amount received may be genuine but the lender’s treatment of it can vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no universal number. The lender’s required period can depend on its policy, the loan product and whether your income is fixed or variable. Submit the consecutive months requested rather than assuming that one common look-back period applies everywhere.

Possibly, if the lender accepts them for your applicant profile. Bank statements show that money entered your account, but they may not explain whether a deposit was salary, commission, business income or a personal transfer. The lender may ask for employment, tax or payment records as well.

They may be considered, but treatment varies. A lender may look at whether the payment is recurring, how long it has been received and whether it is supported by payslips and bank credits. It may average, discount or exclude variable income under its own policy.

Keep the payslip and both bank entries, then show how the transactions add up to the net amount. If one credit is commission, overtime or reimbursement, label it accurately and attach the supporting breakdown where requested.

Do not alter an official statement. Ask the lender whether redaction is allowed or whether another form of evidence can be used. Edited, incomplete or cropped documents may prevent verification and could cause the application to be delayed or declined.

It may not reflect your current salary because a Notice of Assessment relates to income from an earlier basis period. A lender may request your new employment contract, recent payslips and salary credits. Acceptance depends on that lender’s requirements.
